Royal Victoria Railway 10 ¼ inch
The Royal Victoria Railway opened in 1996 in Royal Victoria Park which consists of 200 acres. There had been a small railway here before, but there was virtually nothing left of it. The Railway have bought and built everything that is here today. The first year was spent building, and the first train ran on 24th August 1996. This was hauled by the diesel Maurice the Major (still in service today) with borrowed coaches from Poole Park Railway. During this time the railway built their own coaches which were first put into service in mid November 1996. The Railway has since acquired other locomotives coming from the closed railways ‘Age of Steam’ and ‘Margate Pier Railway’. There are plans to extend the 1 mile line by ½ mile. The extension will include a new terminus station, turntable and tunnel.
