Poole Park Railway 10 ¼ inch

A group trading as Southern Miniature Railways Ltd started this 10.25” gauge railway in 1949. They also operated miniature railways at Stokes Bay, Bognor Regis and Southsea. The only one to survive to present times is Poole Park. A freelance 4-4-2 tender loco “Vanguard” was used daily until about 1965 and occasionally until about 1970. From than on two diesel outline locos provided motive power at first powered by Ford sidevalve petrol engines then diesel in more recent times. Steam did briefly return in the 1990s for about six years in the shape of a saddle tank engine named “Arthur” used mainly on Saturdays, but this was sold in 1997. The line runs for 700 yards around the lake running over a bridge and passing the shed as it goes. The line was taken over by Chris Bullen on 2nd June 2005 and since, two train operation has commenced.
