Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway 15 inch
The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway first opened in 1927 and was the brianchild of Captain Howey and Count Louis Zborowski, both racing drivers. Unforunately Count Louis was killed whilst racing in 1924, but Howey continued building the dream, of a scale railway. The line initially ran between Hythe and New Romney, in 1929 an extension to Dungeness being opened. At 14 miles, it is by far the largest miniature railway in the country. Trains begin at Hythe, and pass through 5 stations and varying countryside enroute to Dungeness station which on the balloon of the route. New Romney is the railways headquarters where there are the sheds and workshops, and a museum telling the lines history. There are numerous bridges, tunnels, signal boxes and road crossings en route, and a 40ft long turntable at New Romney. The scale fleet was built to meet the needs on the demanding line length, and the powerful fleet of steam locomotives is now 11, some looseley based on Gresley Pacifics and others on North American locomotives, but they are all testament to their designer Henry Greenley. The carraige fleet is made up of nearly 70 most of which were built in house.
